To do it for joy
Without expectation
To do it for journey
Not destination
Ignoring the narrative
Embracing sensation
The pain and beauty
Your soul’s validation
Gene G. McLaughlin 2023
Merchants of anger
See no color
Hear no melody
Offering immediacy
Gritted teeth
Clenched fists
Ease of blame
Vague contours of control
Outlines of outrage
A road of broken concrete
Leading to a tire fire
In their statements
Evidence a faraway promise
If even thought of at all
Profit and power
Wash over them
When they steal your joy
Hollowness aches inside them
Disdain burns in them
For signs of growth or hope
In any of you
I will let you name them
You don’t need me to
Perhaps you scoff at me
Turn to them and indulge
What they offer for a while
To feel something
To fill yourself with
To provide meaning
Despite its acrid foul flavor
I know though
If you pause
You will realize
You are crying
For what you have lost
It is yours to take back
Your mind is forever changing
But that mind is forever yours
Gene G. McLaughlin 2020
The subject was pain
Not related to you
Only what me
And mine
Have been through
Empathy is
My needs met
With little
Or no
To do
From you
Gene G. McLaughlin 2016
I’m not done with my damage yet
I’ve got a few more rounds to take
As the pain shapes my path
I’ve got a faith I can’t shake
I’m gonna miss one bit of pain
Before I sleep and then wake
Gene G. McLaughlin 2014
Don’t wear your damage
As blame
But as a life lived
Too close to the sun
Exhibit your pain like art
Let no two joys be the same
Gene G. McLaughlin 2014
Life is never empty of pain
Value empathy not insularity
The path to balance writ plain
Gene G. McLaughlin 2014
In pain
Or distress
Or in the end
You don’t remember
The cause of them
At the end of it all
You recall
The who
The what
You love
Gene G. McLaughlin 2014
The opposite of pain
Is acknowledgement of pain
The path to control
Is the acknowledgement of none
Fate’s not my future
It is what I’ve done
Gene G. McLaughlin 2014
Wickedness born of scarcity
Scarcity born of need
All entwined in a circle
Wickedness meeting with greed
Love born of sacrifice
Needs of others more than self
Hand extends to a stranger
Holding charity and nothing else
Empathy is the light that is endless
No scarcity in its domain
The light shines brightly forever
Opposition of apathy and pain
Gene G. McLaughlin 2013
You’re self contained
Nothing else is missing
Any loss or pain
Don’t take to dismissing
The are no gains
Only slow recognitions
